Do I need a permit or consent?
Generally you do not require a permit or resource consent if your cabin is under 10m2. Check with your local council to be sure.
How long does the process take to build a new cabin?
Allow 3 weeks for a shell. 6 weeks for an open plan finished room. 10 weeks for a build with a bathroom.
What constitutes “portable”?
The cabin needs to be able to be relocated easily either by fitting on a trailer or Hiab truck. Ideally not too wide for easy road use.
Over 10m2?
Generally anything over 10m2 will require a permit, however, if it is on a trailer for example, it can be treated as temporary and usually does not require a permit.
